The opening T20I between India and Australiaconcluded in no result as heavy rain in Canberra didn't allow the match to take place after 9.4 overs. Earlier, at the toss, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh
emerged victorious and elected to bowl first. Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, who were playing their first T20I in Australia, came out to open for India. Abhishek departed after scoring 19 off 14 as Nathan Ellis trapped the southpaw and got him caught at the hands of Tim David. Following the left-handed batter's departure, captain Suryakumar Yadav came into the middle and played a rapid knock of an unbeaten 39 off 24.
Shubman Gill also looked in brilliant touch as he smashed 37* off just 20. The 26-year-old's knock included five boundaries (four fours and a maximum). The match halted twice due to bad weather. After five overs of play, covers were brought into the middle but when rain stopped Gill and Yadav continued their attack on the bowlers. However, after nine overs, when rain once again started to pour, the match was called off.
Suryakumar Yadav finds form before the washout
The match ended in a washout but a huge positive emerged for India, as their captain Suryakumar Yadav and his deputy Shubman Gill saw themselves among the runs after their horrendous performances in the Asia Cup 2025. In the continental tournament, Suryakumar could hoard only 72 runs in six innings of seven matches at a strike rate of 101.40.
In the opening T20I, the 35-year-old batter looked confident as he was seen hammering Australia's quality bowling attack. He will be expected to continue the momentum in the remaining T20Is as well. Following this washed-out match, both teams will square off against each other in Melbourne on October 31.
