Chennai Super Kings have parted ways with long-serving batting coach Michael Hussey* as part of a major coaching overhaul ahead of IPL 2027. The Australian had been an integral part of the franchise since
its inaugural 2008 season. He scored a memorable 116 not out on CSK’s debut, contributed to the 2010 and 2011 IPL titles as a player, and won the Orange Cap in 2013 with 733 runs.
After retiring, he returned as batting coach in 2018 and helped the side lift three more titles (2018, 2021, 2023). The decision comes after CSK’s sharp decline after their 2023 title. The team failed to reach the playoffs for three consecutive seasons including finishing bottom of the table in 2026.
From the very first season in 2008, you have been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings family.
Your journey in Yellow has been defined not just by the runs you scored and the players you mentored, but by the dedication, humility, and unwavering commitment you brought to this franchise over the years. Your place in our history will forever remain special, Hussmeister.

Zaheer Khan looks to leave a mark for CSK after taking over from Stephen Fleming
Chennai Super Kings have entered a new chapter with the appointment of former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as head coach for the 2027 IPL season. He replaced Stephen Fleming, who stepped down after an extraordinary 18-year association with the franchise.
The left hander had been involved since the inaugural season in 2008 and took over as head coach in 2009, guiding CSK to five IPL titles and establishing a culture of consistency and professionalism that defined the team for nearly two decades.
Zaheer’s appointment marks a clear shift as the left-arm pacer brings experience from his playing days and previous roles with Mumbai Indians as director of cricket operations.
CSK management, including inputs from MS Dhoni and the leadership group, backed him for the role on a one-year contract with scope for extension. Alongside the head coach change, several long-serving support staff have moved on including Michael Hussey have parted ways.
Bowling consultant Eric Simons and fielding coach James Foster have also left after the 2026 season. These departures open the door for a refreshed setup under Zaheer. Mohit Sharma has already been named bowling coach, while former England spinner Gareth Batty has joined in the setup adding further depth to the coaching panel.
The transition signals CSK’s intent to evolve and these changes are being made after a couple of disappointing couple of seasons in the IPL.
