At one point, it started to feel like the selectors have decided to move on from Ravindra Jadeja, especially in the ODI setting. However, the star all-rounder has gotten one more chance with his inclusion
in the squad set to clash against West Indies. Though this return feels different from the countless occasions he was almost guaranteed to be on the team sheet.
Jadeja has been recalled for the three-match ODI series against the Caribbean side, beginning on September 27. His return comes after being left out of the ODI squads for the Afghanistan series and England tour. His most recent ODI appearance came against New Zealand in January 2026.
Not only this, but his recall has also come at a point where the Indian team is currently reshuffling their all-rounder options. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are unavailable due to their Asian Games commitments while Hardik Pandya was not considered ready for the series. This opened a door for Jadeja to join the side. However, there is a bigger reason his comeback is worth watching beyond the circumstances surrounding his selection.

Ravindra Jadeja’s Career Has Been Built on More than One Skill
Jadeja has built his career on more than just one skill. Ever since his debut in February 2009 in an ODI against Sri Lanka, he has spent over 17 years in international cricket and is now known as one of the most experienced all-rounders, combining left-arm spin, lower-order batting, and absolutely elite-class fielding.
He has played 210 matches and scored 2905 runs in 142 innings with 87 being his highest total. He has averaged 32.27 and has had a strike rate of 85.54 with 13 fifties. In terms of bowling, Jadeja has picked 232 wickets at an economy rate of 4.88 with the best figures of 5/33. These are not just regular numbers, these figures show why team India continues to see value in him even at this stage of his career.
Jadeja, like his teammates Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has bid adieu to T20I format, and is only active in Tests and ODIs. While he is still a reliable name, one fact cannot be ignored that Jadeja is also in the twilight of his career. He is 37 years old, and will be 38 by the time of 2027 ODI World Cup, and needs to be very consistent with his performance to even stay in the talks of the upcoming tournament.
Otherwise, with names such as Axar Patel and Sundar competing for places, Jadeja’s latest performance could give him an opportunity to demonstrate that experience can still create an impact. Needless to say, the countdown for the marquee tournament has already begun and all teams are building their squads for the quadrennial event, which makes the 2027 ODI World Cup a key series and makes an important window for players competing for positions in the squad.
Jadeja, being such an experienced player, certainly doesn’t need to prove what he has already achieved. This comeback, however, would show what he can still offer.
