Indian cricket fans could get another opportunity to watch Rohit Sharma in domestic cricket, with the senior batter confirming his availability for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. According to a report
by The Indian Express, Rohit has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) that he will be available to represent Mumbai in the domestic 50-over tournament after India’s three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. He is currently in New Zealand to play five-match ODI series.
The development is significant as Rohit continues preparing for the next phase of his international career, with the ODI World Cup scheduled for 2027 remaining an important target.
Rohit Sharma to join Mumbai after Sri Lanka ODI series
India are scheduled to host Sri Lanka for a three-match ODI series from December 13 to 19, 2026. Rohit is expected to join the Mumbai squad after completing his international commitments.
The league stage of the Vijay Hazare Trophy is scheduled to run from December 14 to 29, with the knockout matches taking place between January 2 and January 8. However, Rohit’s exact availability and the number of matches he will feature in are yet to be confirmed.
An MCA source told The Indian Express that Rohit had informed the association about his availability after the Sri Lanka series and would communicate the number of matches he could play at a later stage.
Rohit Sharma’s previous Vijay Hazare Trophy appearance
This will not be the first time Rohit has turned out for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in recent seasons. During the previous edition, he made himself available and featured in two matches in Jaipur.
His return to domestic cricket attracted considerable attention, particularly when he smashed a sensational 155 off just 94 deliveries against Sikkim. However, he was dismissed for a golden duck in his next appearance against Uttarakhand.
Rohit last played the Vijay Hazare Trophy before that in 2018.
Domestic cricket could help Rohit prepare for 2027 ODI World Cup
With Rohit having retired from T20 internationals in 2024 and Test cricket in 2025, he now represents India only in the ODI format.
The Vijay Hazare Trophy could provide him with valuable match practice ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. His experience and batting quality will also be a major boost for Mumbai as they look to challenge for the domestic title.
His participation is therefore expected to be one of the biggest talking points of the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy.
