Former India Head Coach Rahul Dravid shared his insights on working with captain Rohit Sharma during his tenure. Both Rahul and Rohit shared a great bond as a coach and a captain in a two-year span. Speaking
about Rohit’s captaincy style, Dravid said that he is kind of leader who always cares for the team. Dravid also believes that it should be the captain who should run the team.
With Rahul Dravid as Head Coach and Rohit Sharma as captain, India finished in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022, ODI World Cup 2023 and became champions of the T20 World Cup 2024. In his latest podcast with Ravichandran Ashwin on YouTube, Dravid reflected on his relationship as a Coach with captain Rohit Sharma. "I always felt he deeply cared about the team. Right from the first day, he was very clear about how he wanted to run the team and what was important to him," Dravid said.
"I think it’s really important in a relationship between a captain and coach. I always believed it should be the captain’s team. I have been a player and a captain as well. A captain has to lead the team in terms of the direction he wants to go in. You have to help him in that. And of course, you need to help a captain in terms of helping him get clarity and understanding what’s required,” he further added.
Rohit was very clear on what he wanted from the team: Rahul Dravid
Speaking further, Rahul Dravid also mentioned that Rohit Sharma was clear from the starting on how he wanted to run the team after becoming the captain. The former Head Coach said that Rohit was very well connected with the team and was very calm and balanced.
“With Rohit, I thought he was very clear in what he wanted from the team, how he wanted the environment to be, how he wanted the atmosphere to be. I think his experience helped him set these things. For me, it was just working with him, challenging him at times on certain things, but also working with him to ensure that he was able to be comfortable in that space. Once he was comfortable in that space, I knew he was going to perform and get everyone else to perform,” Dravid said.
