In a big update, it is being reported that the first-ever mega auction in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is all set to be held in November. Reports quoting Cricbuzz have informed that the WPL 2026 mega auction is set to be held on November 26 and
27 in the national capital, however an official communication from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet awaited.
As the tournament moves into its fourth year, it will see its first-ever player mega auction this year. As per a report in Cricbuzz, “The Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction will be held in new Delhi. A formal communication has not yet been sent to the franchises, but the teams have all been told informally about the likely venue.” The report also claims that the auction is likely to be wrapped in a day, but the Indian cricket board aims to keep a day if required.
WPL teams to retain five players; retention deadline set for November 5: Reports
Furthermore, as per the communication, each of the five franchises can retain upto five players with the retention deadline set to be November 5. If we further elaborate, a franchise can retain a maximum of three capped Indian players, two overseas players and two uncapped Indian players. But if a team retains all five players, at least one must be an uncapped Indian player.
Moreover, as the tournament will see its first-ever mega auction, the franchises will also be allowed to use the Right-To-Match (RTM) card. Each team has five RTMs, but it will decrease as per the number of players retained.
Additionally with five retentions allowed, the franchise will lose INR 3.5 Crore for the No. 1 player, 2.5 Crore for the second player, 1.75 Crore for the third, 1 Crore for the fourth retention and 50 Lakh for the fifth player retained. The player purse for the auction is INR 15 Crore and five retentions will cost a side INR 9.25 Crore.
