On this day, January 18, 2015: Ab De Villiers scored fastest ever ODI century against the West Indies. Ab de Villiers needed only 31 balls to reach three figures in the second ODI in Johannesburg. The
previous record was held by New Zealand’s Corey Anderson who took 36 balls to reach a century. Ab de Villiers during this innings broke plenty of records. Another record which he broke was the most sixes in an individual ODI innings as he equalled the record Rohit Sharma set against Australia in 2013.
Ab de Villiers just fell short of his 150 as he was dismissed off Andre Russell and was caught at deep extra cover with two balls left having scored 149 from 44 balls. South Africa ended their innings on 439 for two which was four runs short of the highest ever ODI score by a team which Sri Lanka scored in 2006 against the Netherlands.
South Africa were all over West Indies as opener Hashim Amla smashed an unbeaten 153 and Rilee Rossouw scored128. They provided the platform for the De Villiers to explode as the trio helped South Africa register their highest total in an ODI of 439 for two, bettering the total of 438 for nine the South Africa scored against Australia in 2006. It was a memorable day for Ab de Villiers as he had a dream performance. South Africa won the match by a massive margin as West Indies capitulated in the chase and could not make any fist of it. January 18 will be one of the most memorable day for the Protea legend. It is such a terrific record that till date no one has been able to beat that record set by ABD.
