India’s second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo ended in a hard-fought draw on Day 5, despite the visitors appearing to have the match firmly under control for much of the contest. After India piled up
503/9 declared, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 290 and forced to follow on, leaving India with a strong opportunity to complete a series sweep. However, Sonal Dinusha produced a remarkable match-saving performance, following his first-innings century with another hundred in the second innings. He remained unbeaten on 133 as Sri Lanka steadily pushed their lead beyond India’s reach.
The hosts showed tremendous resilience on the final day, with Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha putting together a more than 100-runs stand in the morning session before India finally made breakthroughs after lunch. Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar struck, but Sri Lanka continued to frustrate India, while Lahiru Kumara also battled through 90 balls scoring just 12 runs. With the hosts eventually not slowing down both the teams ended the match in a draw and were later seen shaking hands, India had to settle for a 1-0 series win after their 165-run victory in Galle.
On X, the draw prompted plenty of discussion around Sri Lanka’s incredible resistance and India’s missed chance to finish the series 2-0. Fans particularly highlighted Dinusha’s extraordinary effort while being critical of Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Sri Lanka’s second Test match draw in Colombo, dents India’s WTC Final qualification hopes
India’s World Test Championship final hopes have taken a hit after the Colombo Test against Sri Lanka ended in a draw. Despite dominating large portions of the match and taking a 1-0 lead in the series after their 165-run win in Galle, India could not complete a clean sweep. Sri Lanka’s stubborn resistance, led by Sonal Dinusha’s unbeaten 133, helped the hosts save the Test and deny India the full 12 points that a victory would have brought.
The draw leaves India fifth in the WTC standings with a points percentage of around 51.5%, making the road to the final considerably tougher. India now have seven Tests remaining in the cycle, two against New Zealand followed by a five-Test series against Australia. They will need a near-perfect run from here, with every dropped point potentially proving costly. While the Colombo result has not ended India’s qualification hopes, it has significantly reduced their margin for error. Australia, South Africa and New Zealand remain ahead in the race, meaning India will also need some results elsewhere to go their way.
