Jose Mourinho has launched a strong criticism of the Spanish football authorities over the timing of Vinicius Junior’s four-match suspension, questioning why the decision was announced just hours before
Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League clash against Roma.
The Real Madrid manager expressed his disappointment after his team secured a thrilling 4-3 victory over Roma on Wednesday. Despite the comeback win, Mourinho was unhappy with the disciplinary decision involving Vinicius Junior, insisting that the timing of the announcement raised serious questions.
Mourinho questions timing of Vinicius Junior’s ban
Mourinho questioned why Vinicius was informed of his four-match suspension approximately two hours before kick-off against Roma. The Portuguese manager argued that the decision could have been announced after the match or the following morning instead of creating uncertainty just before an important European fixture.
Using a Portuguese proverb, Mourinho said that the cat was no longer hiding, suggesting that the situation had made the intentions behind certain decisions increasingly apparent. He also dismissed the usual explanations surrounding television scheduling, expressing doubts over the fixture arrangements facing his team.
Real Madrid are scheduled to travel to Valencia for a LaLiga fixture on Saturday after their European commitments, with Mourinho questioning the demands placed on his players.
“Real Madrid fans are not stupid,” Mourinho said, making it clear that he wanted supporters to understand his concerns regarding the situation.
Mourinho reflects on Real Madrid’s comeback victory
While criticising the disciplinary authorities, Mourinho also analysed Real Madrid’s performance against Roma. He admitted that his team struggled during the first half, with Roma’s attacking intensity and tactical approach creating significant problems.
The manager accepted responsibility for the opening 45 minutes but praised his players for showing courage and responding after the break. Real Madrid’s tactical adjustments and substitutions helped them regain control and eventually secure an important victory.
Mourinho also defended his decisions from the sidelines, explaining that maintaining Roma’s intense playing style for the entire match would be physically demanding.
The victory gave Real Madrid six points from their opening two Champions League league-phase matches, strengthening their position in the competition.
However, Mourinho’s comments about Vinicius Junior’s suspension have added another chapter to his growing dispute with Spanish football authorities, keeping the spotlight firmly on the disciplinary decision and its timing.
