Star India cricketer Shubman Gill is celebrating his 26th birthday on September 8, 2025. In recent times, Gill has turned out to be a crucial player for India across formats and is also being looked at as future
all-format captain of the Indian cricket team. Gill got into the limelight for his heroics in India’s U-19 World Cup win in 2018. He was awarded player of the tournament for amassing 372 runs in six matches at an average of 124. In the same year, Shubman Gill got his maiden IPL contract as Kolkata Knight Riders bought him for a whopping INR 1.8 Crore.
Shubman Gill made his debut for the Indian cricket team in an ODI match against New Zealand in Hamilton on January 31, 2019. Since then, he went on to play 37 Tests, 55 ODIs and 21 T20Is for India so far amassing 6000 runs in all three formats combined. He was also recently appointed as India’s Test captain for the recently ended Test series against England. It turned out to be a memorable outing for captain Gill as he turned out to be the best batter of the series amassing 754 runs from five matches at an average of 75.40. He is also appointed as India’s vice-captain for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, which will be played in the T20 format.

Most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series: Playing his first–ever Test series as captain, Shubman Gill shattered several records and left players like Sunil Gavaskar and Virat Kohli behind to score most runs in a Test series as an Indian captain. He amassed a record 754 runs in five Test matches of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy averaging at 75.40 along with three centuries.
Highest individual score as Indian Test captain: During the Test series against England, Shubman Gill achieved another feat when he scored a match-winning 269 runs in the second Test in Birmingham. With this, Gill went past Virat Kohli's 254* runs to register the highest individual score in Tests by an Indian skipper.
Second most runs in a single IPL season: Shubman Gill is just behind Virat Kohli to amass most runs in a single IPL season. Playing for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023, Gill went closest to Kohli’s 973-run records in 2016 as he amassed 890 runs from 17 matches in that season and played a crucial role for GT to get into the final. He batted at an average of 59.33 and a strike rate of 157.80 along with three centuries.
