Bernardo Silva ended an eight-year-long wait to become the first Portuguese player to score for Real Madrid since Cristiano Ronaldo. Silva achieved the feat during a 4-1 Champions League victory over RB
Leipzig at Santiago Bernabéu. His goal that came in the 44th minute of the game, handed Leipzig their second heavy defeat in five days.
In the 44th minute, Maarten Vandevoordt saved Arda Guler’s initial effort; however, Silva reacted quickly and converted the rebound. They went on to double their advantage shortly after the restart when Guler finished from close range following Kylian Mbappe’s headed pass in the 52nd minute. By that time, the Spanish Giants had already established control and later in the 70th minute, substitute Yan Diomane, teed up Mbappe to curl a clinical goal in the 83rd minute.

He then stole the headlines in the 87th minute, and crashed a spectacular goal into the top corner to take the scoreline to 4-1. On the other hand, the Red Bulls competed impressively during the opening 45 minutes and created several opportunities to take the lead. However, they ended up with only one goal during the game, from Tidam Gomis in the 85th minute.
Very happy to have won this game and scored my first goal with this jersey: Bernardo Silva
Following the win, Silva talked to the media and expressed his delight at winning the game and scoring his first goal for the side. “I am very happy to have won this game and scored my first goal with this jersey. It was a tough match, where I think we were much better in the second half than in the first,” he said.
“In the first half, we created some chances but also allowed them to approach our goal quite a bit. Thibaut was very important for us. In the second half, we controlled the game much better, and in the end, we secured a good victory. We are happy and will keep moving forward.”
Notably, before Silva, Ronaldo’s last goal for the side came against Villarreal on May 19, 2018, during a 2-2 La Liga draw.
