Star young batter Shubman Gillhas now become full-time Test captain of the Indian team and was impressive in his maiden Test series as captain. After Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement from the longest
format, Gill was appointed as captain for the five-match Test series in England. Although it was a tough series, India showed a great fight and levelled the series by 2-2. Shubman Gill himself led from the front as he ended up as the best batter of the series amassing 754 runs in five matches at an average of 75.40.
Notably, Shubman Gill has also led India in the T20Is after he was picked as captain for the T20I series in Zimbabwe in July last year. Apart from that, Gill was also India’s vice-captain in the Champions Trophy 2025. Currently, India have a different captain for every format as Shubman Gill as Test captain, Rohit Sharma as ODI captain and Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain. However, former BCCI Devang Gandhi feels that the split won’t work in India for a long run and backed Gill to become all-format captain in future.
There is no reason why selectors should not pick as T20I captain: Devang Gandhi
In his recent interview with Times of India (TOI), Devang Gandhi said that the split captaincy won’t work in India like it works in other countries. The former BCCI selector also said that Shubman Gill has built an aura just like Virat Kohli did in 2017 when he became all-format captain of India. Gandhi also advised Chief selector Ajit Agarkar to go for Gill as a replacement for Suryakumar Yadav as captain in the shortest format.
"Gill has built an aura similar to what Virat had in 2017. Virat was groomed under MS Dhoni. Gill is also at his peak like Virat was. He too has reacted to captaincy as well as Virat did. Ajit Agarkar has shown great foresight by appointing Gill as Test captain. There's no reason why he should not give Gill a leadership role in T20. The messaging has to be clear about who takes over after Surya," Devang Gandhi told TOI.
"Unlike other countries, split captaincy doesn't work in India in the long run because you crave stability in the thought process. When you have a prolific all-format player leading in one format, it becomes difficult not to hand him the same responsibility in the other formats. Gill has ticked all the boxes as a batter. And he has led in the IPL,” former BCCI selector added.
