Days after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming Men’s Asia Cup 2025, there has been a lot of chatter around Shreyas Iyer’s omission. Prominent
cricketers from India and abroad have stepped up to speak on Iyer’s absence from the continental tournament, which is set to be played in the UAE from September 9 to 28.
But recently, former India cricketer and legend, Sunil Gavaskar took an indirect jibe at them while questioning if the selection is perfect in their respective countries. Lashing out at the overseas cricketers, Gavaskar did not mince his words while urging them to focus on their own teams.
Selection of Indian team is strictly none of their business: Sunil Gavaskar hits at foreign players
Writing in his column on Sportstar, ‘The Little Master’ wrote, "What is baffling, though, is that foreigners with no stake in Indian cricket and little knowledge about it wade into the debate, adding fuel to the fire. However great they may be as players and however many times they may have been to India, the selection of the Indian team is strictly none of their business. They should focus on their country’s cricket and let us Indians worry about our cricket. Amazingly, when their country’s teams are selected, there’s hardly anything, if ever, heard from them about the selection.”
"It’s almost as if the selection is perfect and they have no comments to make. So why butt your nose into the selection of the Indian team? Have you ever heard Indian ex-cricketers talk about the selection of other countries’ teams? No, we mind our own business and seriously couldn’t be bothered by who they choose or who they don’t select," he further added.
It is to be noted that Iyer’s non-selection triggered strong reactions from across the cricketing community. Despite finishing as the top run-getter in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in February-March, Iyer was left out of the Asia Cup squad. Apart from him, Yashasvi Jaiswal was also snubbed of a place in the 15-men squad, however was named in the reserve list.
