On September 19, 2007, Yuvraj Singh produced one of the most unforgettable moments in Indian cricket when he smashed England pacer Stuart Broad for six sixes in a single over during the inaugural ICC T20
World Cup in Durban. It was a display of power-hitting that turned an already important match into a night remembered by cricket fans around the world.
The milestone came during India’s Super Eight clash against England at Kingsmead. Yuvraj had already been involved in a heated exchange with England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff, and the left-hander channelled that frustration into a remarkable assault. Broad, who was one of England’s young fast bowlers, was handed the ball in the 19th over and endured a moment that would follow him throughout his career.
Six balls, Six sixes and a dream over
Yuvraj began the over by launching Broad over the boundary. The next five deliveries met the same fate, as the Indian batter repeatedly cleared the ropes and brought the crowd to its feet. 36 runs came from the over, making it one of the most iconic passages of play in T20 history. The assault also helped Yuvraj reach his half-century in just 12 balls, setting a record for the fastest fifty in international cricket at the time.

He eventually finished with 58 off only 16 deliveries, smashing three fours alongside his seven sixes in the innings. India posted a formidable 218/4 in 20 overs, with Virender Sehwag scoring 68 and Gautam Gambhir contributing 58. England fought back through their batting line-up but could manage only 200/6, leaving India with an 18-run victory.
Records tumbled as Yuvraj Singh created history
Yuvraj became the first Indian to hit six sixes in an over in international cricket and only the second player to achieve the feat, after South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs did it in the 2007 ODI World Cup earlier that year. The over also became an early symbol of T20 cricket’s appeal which was aggressive batting, sudden momentum swings and the possibility of a match changing in just six balls.
India went on to win the inaugural tournament, defeating Pakistan in the final, and Yuvraj’s explosive performance remained one of the defining moments of their campaign. Stuart Broad later went on to prove himself as one of England’s greatest fast bowlers, but that evening in Durban belonged to Yuvraj. Six deliveries, six sixes and a record-breaking over made cricket history.
