On September 14, 1990, Team India batter Suryakumar Yadav was born to Ashok Kumar and Swapna Yadav in Mumbai. His journey in cricket was started with his enrollment in a cricket camp at BARC colony in Mumbai. His coach
was Ashok Kamat then. He then joined Elf Vengsarkar Academy, run by former international cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar. In February 2010, he made his domestic debut for Mumbai against Gujarat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2009/10. The next month, he also got his T20 debut in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2009/10 quarter-final against Hyderabad. His First-Class debut came in December 2010 against Delhi.
From 2014 to 2017, he served Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and won the 2014 trophy with the team. However, he became a notable figure in 2018, with his appearance for Mumbai Indians (MI). Donning the MI jersey for the first time, he hammered 512 runs with four fifties in 14 matches at a strike rate of 133.33. In 2020, when Mumbai won their fifth title, he chipped in with 480 runs in 16 matches at a stellar strike rate of 145.01. His best IPL season came in 2025, when he notched up 717 runs in 16 matches and ended up as the second-leading run-scorer in the season.
Breakthrough in international cricket
In March 2021, Suryakumar Yadav made his international debut for Team India with his outing against England at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium. He also served India in 37 ODIs but hasn't featured in the format since World Cup 2023, played in India. In 2024, when the Men in Blue won their second T20 World Cup title, he scored 199 runs with two fifties in eight matches.
After Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20Is, he is handling India’s captaincy mantle in the format. Discussing his batting numbers while serving the Men in Blue in the shortest form of the sport, he has notched up 2605 runs in 84 outings.
