Ashwin, after his retirement, does keep on sharing his views on teams and the approach of the game on his YouTube channel. He seems to be quite vocal on his viewpoint on game analysis, and he has frequently
shared his views on his former team Chennai Super Kings. Recently he did question on the bowling approach and strategy of CSK squad, he went on saying about the “wide” bowling approach that seems like a copy paste approach from other teams and tournaments.
Ashwin said, “ I keep saying the same thing again and again, it’s like Deja Vu, I even saw it in my dreams. Wiaan Mulder in SA20, coming from around the stumps and bowling wide yorkers. Now Nandre Burger is going exact same running in and sticking to wide yorkers from around the wicket. Then in Major League Cricket, I saw a couple of bowlers repeating the same pattern. And now in the yellow jersey whether it’s Kamboj or Overton again at death overs, it’s just wide yorkers from around the wickets. Only the name changes, the script stays same. Honestly, what kind of plan is this? Overton is such a tall bowler, and his yorkers don’t even have much swing yet you’re relying on him to execute wide yorkers again and again.”
He added “ Cricket doesn’t work like that. Two simple things matter first, you plan accordingly to the batsman’s strengths and weakness’. Second, you build your strategy based on the bowler’s own strength. Without that it just looks copy paste approach”
He meant to say that the strategy and approach should differ across players and oppositons but things doesn’t feel like the team under Stepehen Flaming is just using a copy-paste approach each game.
CSK Falling on Strategy and Current match against RCB seems to prove more
Sent in to bat, Devdutt Padikkal scored a 29-ball 50, while opener Philip Salt made a 30 ball 46 to provide the platform. Captain Rajat Patidar (48 off 19 balls) and Tim David (70 off 25 balls) was the actual hero with a blasting finish, smashing 99 runs in 36 balls to take RCB to a mammoth 250 for three, the highest total of this IPL season In reply, CSK were all out for 207 in 19.4 overs with Sarfaraz Khan (50) and Prashant Veer (43) contributing the most. Jacob Duffy (2/58), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3/41) Krunal Pandya (2/36) and Abhinandan Singh (2/30) shared the wickets for RCB with an incredible performance.
Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and India’s star in the T20 World Cup, Sanju Samson, have been really low till date, also their former players Jadeja and Sameer Rizvi are having a blast in other teams. CSK also looks a bit out of shape due to a huge miss of their leader, MS Dhoni, out of IPL for a few weeks due to injury and will only be available in the second phase of the game.
Do you think Dhoni coming back to team can give CSK a boost? Dhoni might be joining the team back in 11th April.
