New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult has signed with Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season, adding considerable experience and quality to the franchise’s bowling attack. The left-arm
quick will feature throughout BBL 16, including the finals, and reunite with fellow New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson.
The signing is a significant boost for Sydney Thunder as they prepare for another campaign in Australia’s premier domestic T20 competition. Boult’s ability to swing the new ball, generate movement in the powerplay and deliver under pressure makes him a valuable addition to the squad.

Trent Boult brings international experience
Boult has established himself as one of the most accomplished fast bowlers of his generation. His ability to move the ball both ways, particularly during the opening overs, has troubled top-order batters across international cricket and franchise leagues.
The New Zealand left-armer has represented his country in all three international formats and has enjoyed success in major T20 competitions, including the Indian Premier League, the Big Bash League, The Hundred and the SA20.
According to Sydney Thunder’s announcement, Boult has claimed 372 wickets in 325 matches across domestic and franchise T20 cricket. He also recently impressed in the inaugural European T20 Premier League, taking 16 wickets in 10 matches, including best figures of 5/24.
Boult previously made his Big Bash debut with Melbourne Stars during BBL 12. His return to the competition gives Thunder an experienced international bowler who can contribute both with the new ball and at crucial stages of an innings.
Sydney Thunder strengthen their bowling options
The addition of Boult alongside Ferguson gives Sydney Thunder two experienced New Zealand fast bowlers for the entire tournament, including the playoffs.
Their contrasting styles and experience could provide the franchise with greater flexibility in different match situations. Boult’s left-arm angle and swing could be particularly useful in the powerplay, while his experience in high-pressure T20 matches adds another dimension to the attack.
For Thunder, securing a bowler of Boult’s calibre represents an important step in their preparations for BBL 16. The franchise will hope his arrival translates into early wickets, tighter bowling performances and a stronger push for the title.
