2011 was no ordinary year in the life of Indian cricket. It was a year marked by the a sensational World Cup win that played a cornerstone to all that India epitomised and stood for – in that moment – and in the years
to come. What Dada Ganguly began a few years ago leading a shape shifting era of Indian cricket marked by a period of steady wins away from home soil, playing a bold brand of cricket would find its amazing grace and cool avatar under Dhoni’s leadership. And in the 2011 One day World Cup final against Sri Lanka where Gautam Gambhir played that valiant 97, putting India onto the driver’s seat before the winning moment came via Dhoni’s whirring blade, countless emotions soon followed. Prior to the 2011 win, India’s last World Cup triumph had come back in 1983.
So in many ways, the 2011 World Cup win marked the triumph of a brand of cricketers who were here to stay and wouldn’t back down. But what about the cricket bat with which the captain ice cool “MS Dhoni” hit that stunning six off Kulasekara to send the ball flying?
As a matter of fact, the administrators of the game have converted the spot where the ball landed into the stands into a sort of a memorial landmark. If that’s not cool, then what is?

But while the spot has since been lionised and serves as a fervent reminder to our glory days from that time, one often tends to wonder as to what became of that bat that Dhoni dislodged the Sri Lankan medium pacer with?
Perhaps you’d be surprised to know that the same cricket bat was out under the hammer at a special function held exclusively in London quite a few years ago.
Furthermore, it’s rather interesting to note that the said cricket auction event was actually held thousands of miles away from the spot where Team India tasted the ODI World Cup glory.
The venue for the same being
London’s Hilton Hotel with the event taking place in the very year of the team’s mega win, which was 2011. The same World Cup that while on the one hand marked the start of several youngsters from Team India also underlined a major commercial transaction with the bat involved. The cricket bat of a maniacally talented force that though operates calmly without losing composure, has come such a long way: Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
But then that being said- what became of Dhoni’s World Cup winning cricket bat and who did it go to?
To that end, here’s what one has to note-
As per a report on the ICC’s official website, Indian investment group R K Global won the bid.
