For most cricket fans, perhaps even the harshest critics of Pakistan cricket team, one of their key winsome moments and a hugely definitive one was the 2021 World cup win over India. Not just down to the deft
that the 2021 win was a big win in the T20 World Cup but also because this was a towering victory earned by Pakistan by a margin as huge as 10 wickets over archrivals India.
More importantly, two of Pakistan’s great batters in that very format- M.Rizwan and Babar Azam were demonstrating peak form and had made life a lot less bearable for the best of Indian bowlers. However, this big win is termed a bit of a fluke by one of Pakistan’s own: none other than the exceptional Mohd. Yousuf, a great batter of his time.

So this leads us to think that what he said recently that seems to have generated a whirlwind in the media? Well, believe it or not, Yousuf said that that famous win was a fluke of a victory and didn’t just stay there; he actually went on and said that it led to the downfall of cricket of hi country.
He said that the decline of Pakistan cricket started after their win against India in 2021, which he called a fluke or unexpected victory. In his opinion, instead of treating that win as a step forward and working harder to improve, some players began to feel they had already achieved something big.
This, he felt, led to overconfidence within the team. According to him, the players slowly became arrogant and lost the hunger that is needed to stay successful in international cricket. He believes that rather than focusing on discipline, training, and learning from mistakes, the team’s attitude changed in a negative way. He also mentioned that the players stopped properly listening to the head coach and support staff, which affected team coordination and planning. He added that in modern cricket, teams must keep evolving, stay grounded, and respect guidance from coaches to remain competitive. When that mindset disappears, performances can become inconsistent. In his view, this change in attitude after the 2021 win played a major role in Pakistan struggling to maintain form and deliver strong, consistent results in the years that followed.
