Warner’s Dhoni pick reflects the Indian legend’s legacy
The final victory of MS Dhoni over Adam Gilchrist has reignited the classic debate over who truly holds the crown as the greatest wicket-keeper batter in cricket history. The former Australian captain transformed the way teams viewed the wicket-keeper’s slot. His aggressive strokeplay dismantled the bowling units and they were very often put under immense pressure. He was the first player in history to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket, and played a legendary 149-run blitz off 104 balls in the 2007 World Cup Final. Gilchrist finished his international career with Australia with a total of 905 dismissals.
On the other hand, MS Dhoni is known for his composure on the pitch and he is the only player in cricket history to score over 10,000 ODI runs while maintaining an average above 50. MS Dhoni’s glovework behind the stumps was lightning-fast and his presence of mind was unmatched. He holds the record as the only wicket-keeper to complete over 100 stumpings in ODIs and in total he has secured over 800 international dismissals. He remains the only captain in history to win all three major ICC white-ball trophies: the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 Cricket World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy.
David Warner’s rapid-fire segment included a highly rated set of wicket-keepers across time and the selection of MS Dhoni over Adam Gilchrist, impressed the Indian fans. Even though the fans were surprised with his last pick, Warner has closely observed MS Dhoni as they have shared the field on numerous occasions in the IPL and on the international stage. The legacy of MS Dhoni behind the stumps and his contribution as captain would have contributed to his final pick.
