On this day, January 16,2022: Australia beat England by 146 runs to seal the Ashes 4-0. Cameron Green led the way as Australia rode roughshod over England’s hopes of an Ashes victory by dismissing the tourists
for 124 in Hobart on Sunday evening to clinch the fifth test by 146 runs and seal a series win. England were 68 without loss chasing 271 towards the end of the second session, the touring side lost 10 wickets for 78 runs to slump to a 13th defeat in their last 15 tests in Australia.
Travis Head was the Player of the Series with 357 runs, starred again, with a hundred in the first innings. After that it was business as usual. England scraped together 188 in their first innings, and in their second, the top score among their last nine batters was 11. Yes, it was that kind of match, and series: England averaged 19.18 with the bat through the five Tests which was their lowest in an Ashes since 1890.
Australia scored 303 runs in the first innings while batting first and in reply, England were bowled out for 188 in the second innings. In the third innings, despite a healthy lead Australia collapsed badly to get bowled out for 155. England were set of just 271 but lost their way and ended the series with another loss, this time but 146 runs.
Australia won the tests in Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne to retain the urn, while the fourth match in Sydney was drawn after England batted out the final day. It was a forgettable tour for England and plenty of players got sacked after this Ashes drubbing.
