Former India spinner Amit Mishra has termed Karun Nair’s omission from India Test squad for the home series against West Indies correct. Notably, Nair made a comeback in India’s red-ball side after eight
years, showing up in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. In the five-match series, India gave the 33-year-old the opportunity to play four matches. On England’s batting-friendly turf, the right-handed batter was expected to have a blast but he failed to make it big. In eight innings of four outings, he could score only 205 runs at an average of 25.62. Karun Nair's ordinary performance resulted in his ouster from the squad.
Amit Mishra, who played 68 international matches, believes that Karun was fortunate that he got a chance to make a comeback in India’s Test team at the age of 33. “He (Nair) was given a chance. I will say that he was very lucky to make a comeback in the Indian team at the age of 32, 33 or 34. It was an opportunity for him to do well. He played so many matches, but did not perform well,” said Amit Mishra to ANI.
Amit Mishra backs BCCI’s decision to move forward with young players
Amit Mishra has also supported BCCI’s decisions to include young batters Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal in India’s Test team. “It happens that after a while, you have to look at the youngsters who are performing well. You have to give them a chance and Sai Sudharsan is one of the players who will now get more chances, as per the thinking which is going on. The way he bats, his technique is good and plays well, takes time to get in and play his shots,” added Mishra.
Sudharsan made his Test debut for India in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. In six innings of three contests, the southpaw scored 140 runs with a fifty in the fourth Test, played in Manchester. In the upcoming home series against the Caribbean side, he will look to be impactful to cement his place in India whites.
