With talks around the future of veteran cricketers - Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli being the talk of the moment, recent reports have made startling revelations in regard with the leadership role in Indian
cricket team. Notably, after Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20Is, Suryakumar Yadav was named India’s T20I captain. After the 38-year-old put down curtains to his Test career in May 2025, Shubman Gill was appointed as the red-ball captain.
In his first assignment as the leader of the pack, Gill led India to a 2-2 series draw against England. In the same series, Shubman Gill also finished as the highest run-getter, amassing 754 runs in 10 innings with an average of 75.40. After his prolific run in the recently-concluded series, the reports are rife of Gill taking over the helm in the 50-over format as well.
Shubman Gill to lead India in ODI World Cup 2027: Reports
Recent reports surfacing on the internet have claimed that Shubman Gill is all set to replace Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain. The reports have further added that Gill will be spearheading the challenge in the ODI World Cup in 2027 with Rohit Sharma unlikely to participate as he will nearing 40.
A report citing SportsTak have claimed that Gill will captain India in 2027 ODI World and will continue at the helm in the unforeseeable future. However, the exact timeline is not known yet. Notably, the 38-year-old India captain last led India in ODIs in the Champions Trophy 2025, guiding India to the title triumph.
Although, he went onto call it quits from Test cricket, he is seemingly not in the plans of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the ODI World Cup which is still far away. Moreover, his compatriot Virat Kohli is also unlikely to be in the plans of the Indian board for the marquee tournament.
