Netizens flooded X with memes and congratulatory messages as the BCCI named Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain. The announcement came as the selection committee revealed India’s squad for the forthcoming
tours to Ireland, England as well as the Asian Games 2026. Notably, the Men in Blue will travel to Ireland and England from June 26 to July 19. It will kick off with two T20Is in Ireland followed by a multi-format white-ball series against England, comprising five T20Is and three ODIs.
With the announcement, Shreyas Iyer made his grand return to the Indian T20I squad as the new captain. Not only this, but with it, the selectors also confirmed the inclusion of sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, as well as named Tilak Varma as the vice captain of the side. The squad also sees the return of Harshit Rana, who last appeared for the side at the start of February this year. Notably, Iyer has replaced Suryakumar Yadav at the helm of the team after the decision to remove him was made following his poor run of form.
Ever since the rumors of Yadav being removed circulated in the air, Iyer emerged as the favorite to take over the control. Other players who were in the race were Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan.
