Courtois’ eight-year legacy at Real Madrid continues to grow
Thibaut Courtois’ legacy with Real Madrid has been unquestionable and he was a key factor in most of their championships across seasons. Courtois delivered a stellar individual performance during the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool. He set a record for the most saves in a single Champions League final to secure Real Madrid’s 14th European title. Courtois has also played a decisive role in winning multiple League titles with Real Madrid and he has consistently anchored their defensive setup. The 34-year-old has earned several accolades throughout his career and he has even won the prestigious Yashin trophy.
Beyond the excellence of Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid would require time to search for an alternative option for the Belgian. It would be quite some task for the Spanish Giants to find another similar keeper and they could make a high profile signing. Young talents like Javi Navarro and Fran González are being monitored closely and Andriy Lunin could be his immediate replacement. Jose Mourinho would enjoy the presence of Thibaut Courtois as long as he could but he would also be aware that the management would have to keep a replacement option ready.
Thibaut Courtois recently took a temporary break from international duty with Belgium and the focus of the keeper would rest entirely with Real Madrid. The Spanish giants would know that they have more to achieve with Thibaut Courtois and the extension till 2028 would be vital. With his immediate future firmly secured in the Spanish capital, the legendary goalkeeper remains set to anchor Real Madrid’s defense for years to come.
