Ravi Shastri produced a batting performance that put his name in the record books. On January 10, 1985, playing for Bombay against Baroda in a Ranji Trophy match at the Wankhede Stadium, Shastri hit six
sixes in a single over and joined one of cricket’s rarest clubs.
Shastri was batting in the second innings when he took on Baroda left-arm spinner Tilak Raj. The over quickly became a landmark moment as Shastri cleared the boundary with each of the six deliveries, matching the feat achieved by West Indies great Garfield Sobers in 1968.

Ravi Shastri’s Six Sixes in an over remain One of Indian Cricket’s Greatest Feats
At the time, Sobers was the only other batter to have hit six sixes in an over in first-class cricket. Shastri’s achievement made him the first Indian to do it and brought national attention to a remarkable innings. Shastri finished unbeaten on 200 from just 123 balls, reaching the double century in 113 minutes. His innings included 13 fours and 13 sixes, making it one of the fastest double centuries in first-class cricket at the time.
Shastri had come in at a crucial stage and transformed the innings with his aggressive approach. His attack on Tilak Raj was the standout moment, but the speed with which he reached 200 was equally impressive. Bombay eventually declared at 457 for five in their second innings, setting Baroda a target of 499. The match ended in a draw, but the result did not take away Shastri’s achievement. His double century and six sixes became one of the defining performances of his domestic career.
The feat also came during a memorable period for Shastri. In 1985, he went on to play an important role in India’s successful World Championship of Cricket campaign in Australia, where he was named Champion of Champions. Decades later, Yuvraj Singh’s six sixes against England at the 2007 T20 World Cup brought the feat to a global audience. But Shastri had reached the milestone more than two decades earlier, in a domestic match that remains part of Indian cricket history.
