The future of Hardik Pandya at Mumbai Indians remains uncertain ahead of IPL 2027, but a fresh development has emerged regarding the all-rounder’s potential role if he continues with the five-time champions.
According to a report by The Indian Express, Pandya has agreed to play under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy if his proposed trade to another franchise does not materialise.
The development comes amid growing speculation that Mumbai Indians are considering bringing Rohit Sharma back as captain for the 2027 season. According to journalist Devendra Pandey, the franchise has been keen on returning the leadership responsibility to Rohit, who guided Mumbai to five IPL titles during his captaincy tenure.
Rohit initially suggested Tilak Varma as a possible captaincy option, but the franchise reportedly requested him to take charge again. Following discussions with the management, the former Mumbai Indians captain has agreed to the proposal.
Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya’s future has been a major talking point since the conclusion of IPL 2026. The all-rounder has reportedly attracted interest from multiple franchises, with discussions around a possible trade gaining momentum in recent months. However, a suitable deal has not yet been finalised.
If the trade does not happen, Hardik is reportedly prepared to continue with Mumbai Indians and accept a supporting role under Rohit. This would mark a significant change in the team’s leadership structure, considering that Hardik replaced Rohit as captain ahead of the IPL 2024 season.
Hardik’s appointment had generated considerable debate among Mumbai Indians supporters, particularly after Rohit had led the franchise to five championships. His tenure has also seen mixed results, with Mumbai finishing ninth in IPL 2024, reaching the playoffs in 2025 and struggling again in the 2026 campaign.
With the IPL 2027 season approaching, Mumbai Indians could be preparing for a fresh chapter under Rohit’s leadership. However, neither the captaincy change nor Hardik’s potential trade has been officially confirmed by the franchise.
