After the recently ended Test series against England, the Indian team will be next seen in action in the Asia Cup 2025 starting on September 9. However, talking about their next red-ball assignment, the Shubman
Gill-led side will host West Indies for a two-match Test series starting on October 2. As India are scheduled to the next match after three months, the star players will be expected to be available for the red-ball assignment.
One of the key players who is likely to make his Test comeback in the West Indies Tests is fast bowler Mohammed Shami. As reported by the Telegraph, a BCCIsource revealed that Shami was not picked in the England Tests due to fitness issues, not on the basis of form. The selectors also consulted him before finalising the squad for the England tour; the 34-year-old wasn’t showing any confidence.
Shami’s Test future is not over: BCCI source
Mohammed Shami was last seen playing in a Test match for India during the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia. After that, he was rested in the Test series against West Indies. After the ODI World Cup 2023, Shami was not seen in action for more than a year due to knee injury and made his comeback before the Champions Trophy 2025. Now, the star pacer is expected to make his return in the Test squad for the West Indies series. However, his performance in the Duleep Trophy will also be taken as consideration before that.
“What we need to see is whether he’ll play even if East Zone clear the quarter-final stage and continue to make progress. Will his body permit it, given his dodgy knee and hamstring? In the Ranji game, he used to bowl three-four overs in a spell and go off the ground. So, whether his body can take the rigours of a multi-day game goes on and on to be a tricky question," the BCCI source was quoted as saying by the Telegraph.
