On Sunday, November 2, the Indian cricket team became the new world champions in women’s cricket, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the 2025 final to win the coveted ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup (CWC)
trophy. This was the first major trophy in women’s cricket for India and it came under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur after defending the competitive total of 298/7 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
The star of the show for India with the bat and ball were Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma, who scored fifties each in the first half of the World Cup final before contributing with wickets. While Verma, who was declared the player of the match, took big scalps of Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp, her teammate Sharma got herself a five-wicket haul, including the final wicket to fall in the South African innings before being declared as the player of the tournament for her all-round show right throughout.
In the post-match presentation, following the emotional Women’s CWC triumph, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur went to the stage to collect the coveted trophy but not before she touched the feet of ICC Chairman Jay Shah. The official was a bit surprised at the gesture from Harmanpreet Kaur before he asked her to get up and muttered something else to her prior to handing over the World Cup trophy.

Moments later, Harmanpreet Kaur took the World Cup trophy towards her players standing nearby at the stage but not before having a tongue-and-cheek moment at their expense. She eventually lifted up the trophy with rest of the teammates celebrating beside her apart from the fireworks and confetti flying around all over the place in front of a jubilant crowd at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
With that, India became the fourth team after England, Australia, and New Zealand to win the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title in its 52-year history.
