After registering a comfortable win in the opening Test in Ahmedabad by an inning and 140-run margin, the Indian cricket team is locking horns with West Indies in the second Test of the two-match series,
underway at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The Men in Blue, who have been in a prolific form, won the toss and elected to bat first.
The decision of Shubman Gill proved key as India has so far added 500-plus runs on the board, courtesy centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (175) and Shubman Gill. Resuming the innings from 318/3, India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the day after a mix-up in the middle, however, Gill continued his brilliant form, reaching his tenth Test hundred and fifth after being named the red-ball skipper.
Shubman Gill joins Virat Kohli to have hit five Test tons in a calendar year as India captain
After scoring his 50 off 95 balls earlier in the day, Shubman Gill went on to complete his ton, tenth overall in Test cricket and fifth just after being named the Test captain of the Indian side. Nearing his hundred-run mark, Gill ran three to reach his tenth century. Bowling the fifth delivery of the 130th over, he bowled on the shorter side which Gill played towards the left of the cover.
Soon after taking three singles, he removed his cap and raised his bat to acknowledge the applause from the Delhi crowd. Thereafter, he even got a warm hug from Dhruv Jurel, who was batting from the other end. With this, he reached fifth Test hundred in just 12 innings as captain of the side, becoming the third fastest after Alastair Cook (nine innings) and Sunil Gavaskar (10 innings).
Notably, after a couple of deliveries Dhruv Jurel fell victim to Roston Chase. With this, India declared their innings having scored 518 runs at the loss of five wickets. The onus now lies on the bowlers, who will look to decimate the West Indies side.
