In a quick turn of events that has caught the cricket world by surprise, West Indies T20 legend Kieron Pollard has reportedly informed Joburg Super Kings of his unavailability for the upcoming SA20 season.
According to Cricbuzz, the decision comes just a day after he was formally appointed head coach of Mumbai Indians, the franchise with which he has been a part of for over a decade and a half.
The West Indies all-rounder had been picked up by Joburg Super Kings for R 1.5 million at the SA20 auction earlier this month. The bid went unopposed after MI Cape Town, the franchise’s sister team in the South African league, chose not to re-sign him.

It marked a rare switch for the Trinidadian power-hitter, who had almost exclusively represented Mumbai Indians and its global affiliates including MI Cape Town, MI Emirates, and MI New York. Sixteen years after Chennai Super Kings lost out to Mumbai Indians in a fierce 2010 IPL auction bidding war for his services, a Super Kings franchise finally got to pick Pollard, only for him to pull out.
Joburg Super Kings forced to find Pollard replacement ahead of SA20
CEO of CSK and all Super Kings franchises Kasi Viswanathan confirmed the news regarding Pollard. “He has conveyed to us that he will not be able to play for Joburg Super Kings. We will now look for a replacement,” he said. The fifth edition of the SA20 is scheduled to run from January 17 to February 21. Pollard’s elevation to head coach of Mumbai Indians was finalised only days earlier. He was called to Mumbai for discussions and confirmed in the role after multiple rounds of talks.
At 39, Pollard remains one of the most experienced T20 players in the world and was closing in on 15,000 career runs in the format. Joburg Super Kings had seen him as a perfect fit to bolster a middle order already featuring Donovan Ferreira and Dian Forrester, while bringing leadership and finishing firepower. Head coach Albie Morkel had previously described the signing as a no-brainer. Joburg Super Kings will now look for a replacement as Pollard pulls out of the upcoming season.
