Shubman Gill, who recently led India in the five-Test home series against England, is set to take on another significant leadership responsibility. After
impressing in his first stint as Test captain, the stylish right-hander is now tipped to become India's T20I vice-captain for the Asia Cup 2025, according to a report by RevSportz.
With regular T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav likely to be fit in time for the continental event, ex KKR star Gill is expected to serve as his deputy, marking a return to the shortest format after a brief absence.
His re-entry into the squad raises a selection dilemma - whether he will open the innings or slot in at No. 3. The current opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson has been in red-hot form, meaning Gill's batting position could be a key talking point ahead of the tournament.
Gill's case for a T20I comeback is backed by stellar IPL numbers. Leading Gujarat Titans from the front, he has amassed 890 runs at a strike rate of 157.80, 426 at 147.40, and 650 at 155.88 in the last three seasons. This blend of high strike rate and consistent scoring has silenced earlier criticism about his T20 adaptability. His leadership potential has also been on display in the IPL, further solidifying his credentials for a long-term role in India's white-ball leadership group.
Currently the vice-captain of India's ODI side, Gill is seen by many as the frontrunner to eventually replace Rohit Sharma as the full-time captain in the format. There is growing speculation that he could even lead India in the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.
Meanwhile, Dainik Jagran has reported that the upcoming ODI series against Australia in October could be a farewell tour for both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the 50-over game. The selectors are believed to have set a condition - if the senior duo wishes to continue until 2027, they must commit to participating in the domestic Vijay Hazare Trophy later this year.
As India prepares for a transition phase, Gill's elevation in the T20I setup signals a strategic move towards grooming the next generation of leaders in Indian cricket.
