Riyan Parag walked into IPL 2026 as Rajasthan Royals' newly appointed captain, carrying the weight of expectation on his shoulders.
The 25-year-old was
handed the leadership role after years of steady growth in the yellow jersey, but six matches into the season, his bat has yet to speak with the authority his team desperately needs.
In the IPl 2026 so far, Parag has struggled. Across 50 balls faced, Parag has scored 61 runs at an average of 12.20 and a strike rate of 122.00. The numbers tell a story of promise mixed with frustration.
Riyan Parag in IPL 2026
The graph of his scores is jagged. He began with an unbeaten 14 off 11 against Chennai Super Kings, showing composure under pressure. Then came a blistering 8 off 4 (SR 200) versus Gujarat Titans and a more substantial 20 off 10 (SR 200) against Mumbai Indians-brief explosions that reminded everyone of the middle-order aggressor who lit up previous seasons.
Yet the last three outings have been worrying: 3 off 5 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, 4 off 6 versus Sunrisers Hyderabad, and 12 off 14 against Kolkata Knight Riders. The strike rate dropped below 90 in those games, and the innings ended prematurely. As captain batting in the top four, Parag is the fulcrum of RR's middle order. The Royals have invested heavily in a balanced squad built around explosive openers and death bowlers, but the engine room-where Parag operates, has traditionally been the difference between playoffs and early exits.
When the top order clicks, someone must consolidate; when it falters, someone must counter-attack. Right now Parag is neither anchoring nor accelerating consistently. The added responsibility of captaincy appears to be affecting his natural instincts. Decision-making under the helmet is one thing; executing shots with clarity is another.
Although Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been excellent for RR, the cracks in the middle-order have exposed in the last few matches. T20 cricket is ruthless, and with the league phase moving fast, RR cannot afford their captain to remain in this transitional phase.
