IND vs SA 1st Test: India captain Shubman Gill's availability for the remainder of the ongoing Kolkata Test - and even the next one in Guwahati - is suddenly
in serious doubt after a worrying escalation of his neck injury on Saturday. The 26-year-old spent the night at Woodlands Hospital under close medical supervision after his discomfort intensified sharply, just hours after he retired hurt during India's first innings.
Gill walked off early on day 2 for four, moments after attempting a slog sweep against Simon Harmer. The shot appeared to jolt his neck awkwardly, prompting immediate attention from the physio.
Initially, the issue looked minor, and Gill did not appear in visible distress. But as the day progressed, the pain worsened dramatically. By the evening session, he needed to be stretchered out of Eden Gardens, his neck secured in a cervical collar - a moment that sparked concern across the Indian camp.
According to a report by Rev Sportz, the opener underwent multiple tests at the hospital and was given medication to ease the spasms. He remained under observation overnight, with early assessments suggesting that recovery could take several days. This puts his participation in the second Test in Guwahati, starting November 22, in major jeopardy.
During South Africa's second innings, Rishabh Pant took over on-field captaincy duties, an indication that team management is bracing for Gill's extended absence. Officials do not expect him to bat again in the second innings unless circumstances become extremely dire.
At the press conference, India bowling coach Morne Morkel tried to ease speculation, suggesting the issue may not be linked to workload despite Gill's relentless travel and leadership responsibilities in recent months. "Sometimes it's just bad luck - you wake up with a stiff neck and it deteriorates," Morkel said.
The BCCI earlier confirmed that Gill is being monitored for a neck spasm and that a call on his participation will be taken depending on his recovery.
With the Test likely to wrap up early on Day 3, Gill's sudden unavailability is a setback for India - not only for the current match but also for the crucial remainder of the series.
