1. India win first Asian Games 2026 medal with shooting silver
India opened its medal account at the 2026 Asian Games with a silver in the women's 10m air rifle team event. Sonam Maskar, Elavenil Valarivan and Vidarsa Vinod finished second behind China, which set a new world record with a cumulative score of 1904.2. India finished on 1903.3, 0.9 points ahead of third-placed Japan. Sonam was India's top scorer in individual qualification with 634.1, while Elavenil posted 633.5. Both shooters also advanced to the individual final later in the day.
2. India women's hockey team thrash Uzbekistan 19-0 at Asian Games
India's women's hockey team opened its Asian Games campaign with a dominant 19-0 win over Uzbekistan. Deepika led the scoring with eight goals, including five from penalty corners, while Ishika completed a hat-trick. India's women's table tennis team also began its campaign with a 3-0 win over Indonesia. The strong opening across disciplines came alongside India's first medal of the Games in women's 10m air rifle shooting.
3. England sweep Sri Lanka 3-0 to take No. 1 T20I ranking
England completed a 3-0 T20I series sweep over Sri Lanka with an eight-wicket win in Manchester, moving above India to claim the No. 1 position in the T20I rankings. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 124, with Pathum Nissanka scoring 36 and Kamindu Mendis making 35. England chased down the target with Buttler unbeaten on 62 off 32 balls and Harry Brook contributing 33. The result extended England's winning run against Sri Lanka to 15 consecutive T20Is. The two teams will now meet in an ODI series.
4. India face kit issues ahead of Asian Games cricket campaign
India's men's cricket team has faced kit sizing and delivery issues ahead of its Asian Games campaign. The team will use a standard kit for its one-off T20I against Japan on September 22 before switching to the official Asian Games kit for the competition from September 28. The BCCI is also arranging its own hotel because of concerns over accommodation, while questions have been raised over the cricket facilities available for the Games.
5. Brighton beat Arsenal 3-0 to end winning run
Brighton defeated Arsenal 3-0, denying the Gunners an eighth consecutive victory. Pascal Gross, Stefanos Tzimas and Chema Andres were on the scoresheet as Brighton produced a commanding result. Arsenal conceded three goals for the first time since December 2023 and dropped from the top of the table on goal difference. Brighton moved into third place following the victory.
6. Gukesh drops below 2700 as India beat Indonesia at Chess Olympiad
Gukesh drew against International Master Satria Duta Cahaya at the Chess Olympiad, taking his live rating below the 2700 mark. India still secured a win over Indonesia in the second round, while several other leading teams were involved in closely contested matches. In the women's competition, second seeds Georgia were held to a 2-2 draw by 48th seeds Montenegro
7. India lose Davis Cup tie 3-1 to South Korea
India were eliminated from the Davis Cup qualifiers after losing 3-1 to South Korea. India stayed alive after Balaji and Dhakshineswar won the doubles rubber 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, having gone 0-2 down after the opening singles matches. South Korea's Kwon Soon-woo then defeated Sumit Nagal 6-1, 6-2 to clinch the tie. India will now compete in the 2027 first-round qualifiers.
8. Asian Games organisers apologise after South Korea anthem error
Asian Games organisers apologised after the North Korean anthem was mistakenly played for the South Korean men's hockey team before its match against Bangladesh. Officials visited the South Korean delegation after the error, which occurred during the Games build-up that has also seen accommodation and airport-related concerns. South Korea went on to beat Bangladesh 5-0 in the match.
9. Mohun Bagan beat Mohammedan SC to win CFL 2026 title
Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Mohammedan SC 3-2 to win the Calcutta Football League 2026 title. Sahal Abdul Samad scored twice, in the 26th and 70th minutes, while Lalremsanga also found the net in the first half. Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Dipravat was sent off, allowing Mohammedan SC to pull one back through a penalty, before Sayan Banerjee scored in the 74th minute. The victory gave Mohun Bagan their first CFL title in eight years.
