The TATA IPL 2026 playoff race is entering the business end, with eight teams still in contention for the coveted playoff spot. Naturally, teams are giving
it their all, juggling points, wins, losses and the net run rate on the same pendulum.
To put things in perspective, the Gujarat Titans are unbeaten in the last three weeks while defending champions, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, have regained momentum. Elsewhere, the Punjab Kings seem to have entered a maze where they are suffering back-to-back losses. Five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings, are still battling it out amidst a plethora of injury concerns, while Hyderabad's seesaw journey in the last five fixtures has definitely rolled the eyeballs of a few.
Amidst this cauldron of qualification race, here are five important and upcoming fixtures which can determine the course of IPL 2026:
Kolkata Knight Riders vs Gujarat Titans (May 16)
Three-time champions KKR have revitalised their season after a sluggish start. They came back into the hunt on the back of great performances from Rinku Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, and Finn Allen. On the other hand, the 2022 IPL champion GT are riding on a five-match winning streak. To add the cherry on top, Shubman Gill's men need just one more win to get a 'Q' against their name, while for KKR, it will be a must-win game to keep their title hopes alive.
Punjab Kings vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (May 17)
A rematch of last year's final, the PBKS vs RCB match might turn out to be the most pivotal one in the race. After a seven-game winning streak, Punjab seems to have lost its way in a tunnel, losing back-to-back matches. However, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Bangar feels that the clash will not only be the quest of survival for Punjab, but will also give a comfortable headstart to either of the two teams for a top 2 finish.
Speaking on JioHotsar, Bangar added, "Punjab will be under pressure because recent history against RCB hasn't exactly been in their favour, but it's a new season, and I hope that it doesn't play on their minds. It's a big game, and PBKS would want to leave the hills on a high because this fixture could be a real decider in determining who carries that confidence into the next round. "
Chennai Super Kings vs Sunrisers Hyderabad (May 18)
CSK has quietly gained momentum with three consecutive victories and will hope for a similar surface against the heavy-duty batting unit of the Sunrisers. The sluggish pitch of Chepauk has traditionally been a bowling paradise for the spinners of Super King, who will look to use Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein to contain the SRH's powerful sloggers. Meanwhile, SRH is in contention for an 18-point finish.
Speaking at the JioHotstar presentation, former Indian cricketer Akash Chopra said that the final home game of the season for CSK can turn out to be a must-win game for both teams, especially for Chennai, who have a 60 % win rate this season in Chepauk. "Given how congested the table is, it will be a must-win for both, especially the home team. They have had to manage a lot of injuries, but still, players like Anshul Kamboj, Urvil Patel and the two spinners have stood up for them, and they will be key again if they have to stop SRH's big-hitters," Chopra added.
Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings (May 21)
Gujarat have formed an impenetrable fortress at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The team seems to have hit the perfect chord of balancing decent wickets with a bit of green cover to aid their fast-bowling unit. On the other hand, they have found the perfect combo of four batters spearheaded by the dynamic duo of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan.
At Chepauk, the Titans showed that they can pull out a trick or two from their sleeves as well on a sluggish pitch. To add to that, CSK will need to find an answer to the Siraj-Rabada partnership, who have been wreaking havoc on the batters and have been pivotal to Gujarat's win. Rabada's sensational form has been crucial to GT's dominance in the first six overs with the ball. A win against Chennai will definitely up the ante for GT in this race to the top.
Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (May 22)
RCB thrashed SRH in the opening of IPL, but the additions of Praful Hinge, Sakib Hussain, and Eshan Malinga have greatly improved Hyderabad's bowling attack. This match can potentially become a run-fest, with both teams looking to unleash their sloggers on a flat deck in Hyderabad.
Speaking on the JioHotstar, former SRH player Irfan Pathan said, "RCB's bowling attack, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood setting the tone upfront, has been executing its plans exceptionally well. " The left-hand pacer further said that given the criticality of the tournament, Hyderabad's hopes of qualification will heavily depend on a strong start from 'TraviShek'.
With the league stage nearing its final phase, these high-stakes matches might eventually determine whether teams advance to the TATA IPL 2026 playoffs.
