Campa Cola winning a BCCI bidding war makes sense - it's a beverage brand fighting Bisleri for eyeballs during India's cricket season, the oldest playbook
in Indian sports marketing. What doesn't fit the old playbook is the name sitting right next to it on the same 35-match deal: ChatGPT, official associate partner of India's home bilateral cricket through March 2028.
The bidding itself was tight enough to matter. Campa Cola topped the associate partner auction at ₹1.31 crore per match, edging out Bisleri and Indian Oil Corporation, who each came in at ₹1.2 crore. ChatGPT and SBI Life matched that same ₹1.2 crore figure to round out the trio. Three brands, one price point for two of them, covering every home bilateral fixture India plays for the next roughly two and a half years.
Why the BCCI Split This Deal Into Two Pieces
This associate partner package isn't the board's biggest prize - that's still the vacant title sponsorship, unfilled since the previous deal lapsed in August 2026. What's notable is how the BCCI handled the gap: rather than let an unresolved title search stall everything, it pushed the associate partner deadline from August 25 to September 7 and closed that piece independently.
It's a sequencing decision that lets sponsorship revenue keep flowing while the board keeps negotiating for the marquee name - a title sponsor search that's now dragged on for over a month past its own original bid deadline.
An AI Chatbot Buying Its Way Into the Cricket Conversation
Beverage and insurance money on a cricket broadcast is background noise at this point. An AI platform paying ₹1.2 crore per match for the same real estate is the actual news.
It signals two things happening at once: cricket sponsorship inventory has gotten diverse enough that a tech product now competes directly with soft drinks and insurers for the same slots, and OpenAI (or whoever's managing ChatGPT's brand spend) has decided that India's cricket audience - arguably the largest single sports-viewing bloc on the planet - is worth paying premium consumer-marketing rates to reach, the same way a bank or a bottled water brand would.
What Happens Next Actually Matters More
The associate tier being filled doesn't resolve the bigger question hanging over BCCI's books: who takes the title sponsorship, and when. That deal will dictate the real commercial tone of India's next cycle of home cricket - dwarfing what Campa Cola, ChatGPT, and SBI Life just paid combined. Until that's settled, the board is technically selling its biggest asset with the "sold" sign still missing from the front window, even as the smaller inventory around it keeps finding buyers at rising prices.
