However, by the time the league stage concluded, the IPL 2026 table had undergone a dramatic transformation. Gujarat Titans stormed into the top two after a poor start, Sunrisers Hyderabad evolved into one of the most dangerous teams in the competition, Punjab Kings collapsed out of qualification contention, and Rajasthan Royals timed their late-season surge perfectly to sneak into the playoffs.

By the end of the league stage, Gujarat Titans had climbed all the way to second place with 18 points, securing the crucial top-two playoff advantage. Their rise perfectly demonstrated how timing momentum correctly often matters more than early-season form.
RCB Maintained Stability Throughout the Tournament
Unlike most teams that fluctuated dramatically during the season, Royal Challengers Bengaluru remained remarkably stable from start to finish.
RCB were second midway through the season and eventually finished at the top of the table with 18 points. Under captain Rajat Patidar, Bengaluru managed to avoid the long losing streaks that damaged several other franchises.
Their batting lineup consistently delivered in pressure situations, while their bowling attack showed significantly better discipline compared to previous seasons.
After finally winning their maiden IPL title in 2025, RCB now head into the playoffs looking like genuine contenders to defend the championship successfully. Their consistency throughout both halves of IPL 2026 has arguably been their greatest strength.
Sunrisers Hyderabad Quietly Became Title Contenders
Sunrisers Hyderabad may have been fourth midway through the season, but very few expected them to emerge as one of the strongest teams entering the playoffs.
SRH's transformation during the second half came through a fearless batting philosophy and a much clearer tactical structure. Their aggressive approach allowed them to build momentum rapidly while simultaneously improving their net run rate.
As other teams around them stumbled under pressure, Hyderabad quietly surged into third place with 18 points.
Perhaps more importantly, they now look like one of the most dangerous knockout teams in the competition because of the confidence and momentum they have built late in the season.
Rajasthan Royals Timed Their Run Perfectly
Rajasthan Royals also managed the second half of the season intelligently despite enduring periods of inconsistency.
RR were already inside the top four at the halfway stage, but their campaign truly gained momentum during the final stretch of league matches. Their historic 221-run chase against Lucknow Super Giants completely revived their season and injected belief back into the squad.
The emergence of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi added a fresh dimension to Rajasthan's batting lineup, while Yashasvi Jaiswal continued to anchor crucial run chases.
Eventually, Rajasthan secured the final playoff spot with 16 points after navigating one of the tightest qualification races in recent seasons.
KKR's Recovery Came Too Late
Kolkata Knight Riders spent the first half of IPL 2026 at the bottom of the table with just one win in seven matches. At that stage, their playoff hopes looked virtually impossible.
To their credit, KKR produced a spirited late-season recovery that briefly brought them back into contention. However, the damage from their disastrous start ultimately proved too severe to overcome completely.
