India's hopes of reaching the men's Hockey World Cup semi-finals were ended by Argentina, but the 5-3 defeat in Amstelveen was less a sudden collapse than
the culmination of problems that had been evident for much of 2026.
Having already lost 3-1 to the Netherlands, India needed to beat Argentina by at least two goals to keep their semi-final hopes alive. Instead, they conceded twice inside the opening six minutes, spent much of the contest chasing the game and eventually slipped to their third defeat against a higher-ranked opponent at the tournament.
The scoreline was damaging. More concerning was the manner of the defeat.
India's defence repeatedly unravelled under pressure, their possession rarely translated into meaningful attacking opportunities and their inability to match the intensity of the world's best sides was exposed once again. For a team that had won consecutive Olympic bronze medals in Tokyo and Paris, the regression is difficult to ignore.
Early defensive mistakes put India on the back foot
India knew the equation against Argentina. They needed goals, but the first requirement was to avoid conceding early.
They failed on both counts.
Just 39 seconds into the contest, Argentina worked the ball down the right and a poorly defended cross found Joaquin Toscani unmarked in front of goal. He made no mistake.
Five minutes later, hesitation between two Indian defenders over a long ball allowed Argentina to win a penalty corner, with Nicolas della Torre finding the middle of the goal to double the advantage.
For a side that had to attack, falling two goals behind inside six minutes was almost the worst possible start.
India did respond through Sukhjeet Singh in the 10th minute, briefly reviving hopes of a comeback. But the larger pattern remained unchanged. Argentina were quicker to second balls, more decisive in possession and considerably more dangerous whenever they entered India's circle.
India had 54.5 per cent possession by half-time, but Argentina led 10-6 on circle entries and 5-1 on shots on target. Possession, without penetration or a decisive final pass, did little to alter the contest.
The numbers underline India's defensive decline
The statistics from the tournament are difficult to overlook.
India had conceded 16 goals in their first five matches, their worst defensive record at a World Cup since 2010. Twelve of those goals came from open play, underlining that the problem went beyond penalty-corner execution.
The wider 2026 record is equally troubling: 10 defeats in 21 matches and 45 goals conceded.
Even before the World Cup, there had been warning signs. India finished eighth in the FIH Pro League, winning only four of their 16 matches.
The World Cup therefore did not create India's problems. It exposed them.
The pattern against the strongest opposition was particularly stark. India lost to all three higher-ranked teams they faced - world No. 4 England, world No. 1 Netherlands and world No. 7 Argentina - each defeat coming by a two-goal margin.
That suggests a widening gap between India's ability to compete with teams around their level and their capacity to withstand the best sides when the pressure rises.
Argentina exposed the flaws in India's defensive system
Craig Fulton had spoken about the need to learn from the defeat to the Netherlands, particularly India's defensive discipline.
Yet against Argentina, the structure repeatedly broke down.
India employed a man-to-man approach while pressing in attack and a zonal system when defending, a combination that appeared to create uncertainty at the back. Harmanpreet Singh was frequently involved higher up the pitch, leaving the rest of the defensive unit exposed to Argentina's pace in transition.
The third quarter brought another reminder of the same weakness.
Argentina immediately restored their intensity after half-time, won the second ball and created another penalty corner before Tomas Domene finished a sweeping move from the left with a strike that left goalkeeper Mohith no chance.
India then conceded again after Yashdeep made an unnecessary back pass that presented Argentina with an opportunity for a penalty stroke. Domene converted to make it 4-1.
Lucas Toscani added a fifth after running through three Indian defenders.
By then, the contest was effectively over.
Sukhjeet and Hardik Singh added late goals - Hardik from a penalty stroke - but they were little more than consolation.
India's attack had problems of its own
The defensive failures were the most obvious issue, but India's attack was hardly convincing.
Their inability to turn possession into sustained pressure was evident throughout the match. Abhishek, who had scored twice against Pakistan, had gone quiet during the tournament, while Mandeep Singh struggled to make the kind of impact expected from an experienced forward.
India also managed only five field goals among their 14 goals at the tournament, highlighting their reliance on set-piece opportunities and individual moments.
Against Argentina, even a sequence of four consecutive penalty corners in the third quarter failed to produce the breakthrough India needed. Harmanpreet was repeatedly denied the opportunity to unleash his drag-flick, while the absence of another proven option raised questions about the team's selection.
Did India get their selection right?
The decision not to use Vivek Sagar Prasad and Jugraj Singh in such a decisive match will inevitably invite scrutiny.
Jugraj had endured a difficult tournament and had been at fault for goals in India's group-stage defeat to England. But with him absent, India's main drag-flicking options behind Harmanpreet were significantly reduced, with Sanjay not possessing the same record as a prolific penalty-corner scorer.
Vivek, meanwhile, had been influential in India's victory over Pakistan, controlling the tempo from midfield. Yet he was left out of the team entirely for the Argentina game.
There is no guarantee either player would have changed the outcome. But in a do-or-die World Cup match, leaving experienced options on the sidelines inevitably raises questions when the side struggles for both control and attacking variety.
The generational problem is becoming harder to ignore
India's defensive difficulties also reflect a broader transition within the team.
Rupinder Pal Singh and Birendra Lakra, key members of India's Olympic bronze-medal-winning sides, are no longer part of the equation. The retirement of goalkeeper P R Sreejesh has created another significant void.
Harmanpreet remains India's most dependable penalty-corner weapon, but he did not appear to be at his sharpest physically during this campaign. Sanjay has shown promise, yet the defensive unit around them has not established the consistency required at the highest level.
The forward line faces a similar question.
There is experience, but not enough sustained penetration or attacking explosiveness. Even Hardik Singh, one of India's most influential players in recent years, endured an ordinary tournament by his usual standards.
The solution cannot simply be to preserve the existing core and hope for improvement. India need to determine which positions require immediate reinforcement and begin introducing the next generation before the gaps become impossible to fill.
Fulton now has difficult questions to answer
Fulton was candid after the defeat, describing it as a "difficult day" and admitting that India "started poorly".
More importantly, he acknowledged the wider problem: "We played at a high level in tournament, but in the big games we have to do better. "
Sukhjeet was equally direct, saying India "committed silly mistakes in defence" and were "lazy at the start".
Those admissions point towards the work that now needs to be done.
India must become harder to break down, make better decisions under pressure and develop more reliable attacking options. They also need to find a defensive structure that does not collapse when opponents increase the tempo.
The Asian Games will provide an immediate opportunity to respond, but the World Cup has exposed issues that cannot be fixed through one tournament or a change in formation.
India's wait for a World Cup semi-final continues
India will now play co-hosts Belgium in the seventh-eighth place classification match on August 28, a fixture that carries little bearing on the title race but will determine how they finish a disappointing campaign.
The bigger concern is that India's wait for another men's Hockey World Cup semi-final continues.
It has now been 51 years since the country's title-winning run in 1975, and another generation has passed without India reaching the last four.
The consecutive Olympic bronze medals had suggested that Indian hockey was moving steadily towards the world's elite. This World Cup has offered a more sobering assessment.
India remain capable of producing strong performances and competing with the best on their day. But until they can consistently defend under pressure, convert possession into chances and match the intensity of the top-ranked teams, the gap between promise and achievement will remain.
The defeat to Argentina was not the beginning of India's problems. It was the clearest evidence yet that they need to rebuild before the next World Cup arrives.
