India Test captain Shubman Gill has been discharged from a Kolkata hospital after being treated for a neck injury sustained during the first Test against
South Africa at Eden Gardens.
Gill, who was rushed to Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital on the second day of the match after experiencing severe neck pain from a whiplash-like injury while batting, is reported to be stable, able to walk, and move his neck with significantly reduced pain.
He has now returned to the team hotel to continue resting and be monitored by the BCCI medical team.
The injury occurred shortly after he came out to bat following the drinks break on Day 2, when a forceful slog-sweep shot triggered the neck issue, leading him to retire hurt after just three balls faced. This incident impacted India's performance as they went on to lose the match by 30 runs.
Despite being discharged, there remains uncertainty over Shubman Gill's availability for the second Test starting in Guwahati on November 22. The BCCI medical team is closely monitoring his recovery, and the final decision regarding his participation will be made based on how he responds to treatment in the coming days. Former India captain and Cricket Association of Bengal president Sourav Ganguly visited Gill at the hospital and talked with the India skipper.
Gill's absence in the first Test was a significant blow to the Indian side, which struggled to hold their innings together on the turning pitch, losing the first Test by 30 runs. His recovery and potential return will be crucial for India's campaign in this series against South Africa as the 2nd Test starts in five days' time in Guwahati.
