IPL 2026: The Indian Premier League 2026 campaign has not even begun, and Kolkata Knight Riders are already finding themselves in the middle of chaos.
The three-time IPL champions splashed ₹ 18 crore to secure the services of Sri Lanka's star pacer Matheesha Pathirana ahead of the new season.
The move looked solid and aligned with the plans of KKR, given the massive experience that the Sri Lankan pacer gained with his stint with the Chennai Super Kings. However, things took a solid U-turn when the Sri Lankan pace sensation injured his calf during the group's clash during the T20 World Cup 2026 against Australia in Pallekele last month.
KKR's Trouble Ahead Of IPL 2026
With the Indian cricketing gala nearly two weeks away, Pathirana has issued a concerning update for the new IPL franchise, which bought the Sri Lankan for a hefty sum. On Tuesday, he posted a picture on his social media platform giving an update on his injury.
"Hello everyone!! Just to clarify, I'm still in Sri Lanka continuing my rehab with SLC. I haven't gone to India yet, so please stay calm!" Matheesha Pathirana wrote in a story posted on his Instagram.
KKR's Pace Dilemma
Kolkata Knight Riders invested heavily in its foreign recruits, signing Cameron Green, Matheesha Pathirana and Mustafizur Rahman. After being forced to part ways with Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman due to geopolitical tensions, Kolkata Knight Riders are now heavily reliant on Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana as their primary pace option.
However, uncertainty surrounding Pathirana's fitness has added to the franchise's concerns ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season.
With doubts also lingering over the availability of Indian pacer Harshit Rana, the three-time champions currently find themselves with limited options in the seam-bowling department. Their remaining pace resources include Umran Malik and Kartik Tyagi, both of whom have previously struggled with recurring injury issues.
Despite these challenges, KKR still has the option to bring in a replacement player for Mustafizur Rahman if needed.
Meanwhile, the franchise continues to boast a strong overseas contingent featuring players such as Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Cameron Green, Rovman Powell, Sunil Narine, and Rachin Ravindra, giving them considerable depth in their overseas roster.
When Will KKR Play Its First Game?
Kolkata Knight Riders will play its first game against the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on March 29 at 7:30 pm.
