As India take on Sri Lanka in the first of the two-match Test series in Galle, an off-field issue has taken a share of the talking points.
A post-match
show produced an unexpected contest away from the cricket field when former India cricketers and commentators Sanjay Manjrekar and Murali Kartik became involved in a sharp on-air exchange.
What began as light-hearted banter during the break on Day 3 quickly became personal, leaving viewers and social media users debating whether the commentators crossed the line.
How Did the Manjrekar-Kartik Spat Begin?
Kartik, who was part of the studio panel while Manjrekar was in Galle, started the exchange by taking a dig at Manjrekar's trademark facial expression.
Kartik joked that Manjrekar's "pout" sometimes made it difficult to understand what he was saying, asking him to limit it.
Manjrekar did not take the comment lightly. He responded by asking the broadcast team to shift the camera towards former India batter Ajinkya Rahane, saying Rahane was a "much more pleasant person" to talk to and had a more pleasant face.
He then took another swipe at Kartik, referring to the former spinner's voice and appearance. Kartik hit back, saying he did not look at himself in the mirror, suggesting that was something Manjrekar did.
At that point, Manjrekar acknowledged that the exchange was heading towards dangerous territory, saying: "Anyway, we're both going to cross lines here, and social media will have a field day. "

Sanjay Manjrekar and Murli Karthik Heated Convo Escalated So Quickly!

Sanjay- Do you ever Look into Mirror, its not very…
Was It Too Much?
This is where the debate becomes interesting.
Cricket commentary has always had room for humour, teasing and personality. Viewers are accustomed to former players exchanging jokes, particularly when they have a long professional relationship. In that sense, Kartik's initial comment could reasonably be viewed as harmless banter.
The problem was that the exchange moved from cricket-related humour into personal comments about appearance.
Kartik's remark about Manjrekar's pout was pointed, but Manjrekar's response went a step further by targeting Kartik's appearance. Once the discussion moved away from cricket and towards how the two commentators looked, the tone became considerably more uncomfortable.
Manjrekar's attack on Karthik's appearance surely had a vile dig and someone watching the clip would definitely feel uncomfortable, especially the way Manjrekar uttered the words.
