Less than two years after a devastating knee injury shattered his Olympic dream, Murali Sreeshankar scripted one of the greatest comeback stories in Indian
athletics by clinching the silver medal in the men's long jump at the Commonwealth Games 2026.
The 27-year-old, who missed the Paris 2024 Olympics after suffering a complete rupture of the patellar tendon in his left knee and a small break in bone during training in April 2024, returned to the international stage in spectacular fashion, proving that determination and resilience can overcome even the toughest setbacks.

Sreeshankar, India's national record holder, opened strongly in the final and eventually registered a best jump of 8.09m, a mark that kept him in medal contention throughout a high-quality competition. He even led the field after the first three rounds before the battle intensified in the final three attempts.
Despite fierce competition from a stacked field, the Indian star held his nerve to secure the silver medal, marking the biggest achievement of his career since winning silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The medal carried far greater significance than just another podium finish. Following his ACL injury in 2024, Sreeshankar underwent surgery and spent months away from competition, enduring an exhausting rehabilitation programme while watching the Paris Olympics from the sidelines. At a stage when many questioned whether he could regain his explosive take-off and consistency, the Kerala athlete remained focused on returning stronger.
During an event, the Indian athlete was doing commentary and was taking his treatment simultaneously. And all of his sacrifices have paid off with another podium finish.

Working closely with his father and coach S. Murali, Sreeshankar gradually rebuilt his fitness, confidence and technique. The road back was long, but every training session brought him closer to the biggest comeback of his career.
The road back was built one competition at a time. Sreeshankar announced his return by winning the Indian Open Athletics Meet in Pune, signalling that the worst was behind him. Confidence grew with every outing as he returned to the global stage at the World Championships, secured qualification for the Commonwealth Games, soared to a stunning 8.38m at the Inter-State Championships-one of the best jumps of his career-and also achieved the Asian Games qualifying standard.
From recovery to rediscovering his peak, the Indian long jumper's rise gathered momentum with every meet, culminating in another Commonwealth Games medal.
Sreeshankar looked composed from his opening jump, and his massive leap in his 2nd attempt ultimately earned him the silver medal. The Indian had a couple of errors in between, but it is a step in the right direction as he dreams for Los Angeles 2028.
