New York, July 21: FIFA World Cup 2026 has been a paradoxical conundrum with extraordinary highs and grovelling lows that blotched the footballing canvas
forever. But despite this, the tournament will be remembered as a landmark edition that largely delivered on the pitch while overcoming one of the most ambitious logistical challenges in football history.
Hosted by three host nations, the United States, Canada and Mexico, the expanded World Cup featured 48 teams, 16 venues and a record 104 matches over six weeks. While concerns over logistics, security, politics and the expanded format loomed before kickoff, the competition largely succeeded in keeping the focus on football.
Packed stadiums became a familiar sight despite premium ticket prices, while television audiences remained robust, even after the United States crashed out in the Round of 16. The tournament also introduced global stars such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland to an even wider North American audience, further strengthening football's growing footprint in the region.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino was effusive in his praise while reflecting on the tournament's success.
"We have had a record number of spectators in the stadiums, almost 7 million," Infantino said. "We will have had, I mean the official figures will come out soon, but probably over 6 billion people watching it from home. "
The numbers backed up his optimism. While Fox is yet to release its final television figures, Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo reported a preliminary audience of 22.6 million for Spain's 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina, putting the final on course to become the most-watched FIFA World Cup final in Spanish-language television history. Earlier in the tournament, the United States' Round of 16 defeat to Belgium attracted over 45 million viewers across Fox and Telemundo.
The decision to expand the World Cup to 48 teams had drawn criticism before the tournament, with many fearing the quality would suffer. Instead, the competition produced several memorable Cinderella stories. Cape Verde held eventual champions Spain to a draw in the group stage before taking Argentina to extra time in the knockout rounds. Congo advanced beyond the group stage and pushed England, while CuraÇao remained in contention for qualification until its final group fixture.
By the semifinal stage, however, football's traditional heavyweights had taken control, with Spain, Argentina, England and France, all among the world's top-ranked teams, contesting the final four places.
Not everything unfolded smoothly. Players battled extreme summer temperatures, with Philadelphia witnessing one of the toughest conditions as the mercury approached 38°C during a knockout match between Paraguay and France. The final itself escaped another potential disruption when rain cleared smoke drifting from Canadian wildfires just in time for kickoff.
Politics inevitably found its way into the tournament. Iran's participation amid tensions in the Middle East sparked logistical complications, including the relocation of its base camp from Arizona to Mexico. Visa issues affected members of Iran's delegation, while travel restrictions prevented several fans from attending matches. The suspension of United States forward Folarin Balogun's one-match ban ahead of the Belgium clash also invited scrutiny over FIFA's decision-making.
Infantino, however, chose to focus on the bigger picture. "I think we have to invent a new vocabulary, new words to define the success of this World Cup," he said.
While debates over politics, climate and logistics will continue long after the final whistle, the football ultimately took centre stage. For all its challenges and controversies, the 2026 FIFA World Cup proved that the sport's biggest spectacle could grow larger without losing its ability to captivate millions around the globe.
