The playoff race in IPL 2026 could take a major turn when Punjab Kings host Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on May 17.
While
RCB are closing in on a top-two finish, Punjab Kings are suddenly under immense pressure after a dramatic collapse in the second half of the season.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru: One win away from playoffs
- Played: 12
- Points: 16
- NRR: +1.053
- Remaining matches: PBKS (A), SRH (A)
RCB have put themselves in a commanding position after defeating Kolkata Knight Riders and climbing to the top of the points table.
A victory against Punjab Kings would officially confirm their playoff qualification and take them to 18 points, where their superior net run rate would almost certainly keep them safe even in a crowded race.
More importantly, a win in Dharamsala would also put Rajat Patidar's side in strong contention for a top-two finish, giving them two shots at reaching the final.
Even if RCB lose one of their final two matches, they remain favourites to qualify because of the best NRR in the tournament.
However, losing to PBKS could slightly complicate matters. In that scenario, RCB could still finish on 18 points if they beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in their final league game, but qualification may then depend on other results involving GT, CSK and RR.
If RCB lose both remaining matches and stay on 16 points, their playoff hopes would come down to net run rate and favourable results elsewhere.
Still, among all teams in contention, RCB remain in one of the strongest positions heading into the final stretch.
Punjab Kings: From unbeaten run to survival fight
- Played: 12
- Points:13
- NRR: +0.428
- Remaining matches: RCB (H), LSG (A)
Punjab Kings enter this clash under massive pressure after suffering five consecutive defeats following their unbeaten seven-match start to the season.
Their latest loss came against Mumbai Indians, where they failed to defend 201 despite a strong batting performance.
Now, the equation has become simple for PBKS.
Win both remaining matches, and they finish on 17 points, which would almost certainly guarantee playoff qualification.
A victory over RCB would be especially significant because it would:
- stop a direct rival,
- improve PBKS' qualification chances,
- and keep top-two hopes mathematically alive.
However, another defeat could leave Punjab dangerously exposed.
If PBKS lose to RCB and beat LSG, they would finish on 15 points and become heavily dependent on results involving SRH, CSK, RR and GT.
Their healthy net run rate still gives them some cushion, but the margin for error is now almost gone after the five-game losing streak.
Why PBKS vs RCB is now one of the biggest games of IPL 2026
This fixture now carries huge implications at both ends of the table.
For RCB:
- A win seals playoff qualification.
- A top-two finish becomes highly likely.
For PBKS:
- A defeat could push them to the brink.
- A win completely revives their campaign.
The match also carries extra narrative weight after the two sides met in the IPL 2025 final, where RCB lifted their maiden title.
This season, though, the momentum heavily favours Bengaluru.
RCB have won eight of their 12 matches and look one of the most balanced teams in the competition, powered by Virat Kohli's form, Josh Hazlewood's powerplay dominance and a far more stable middle order.
Punjab Kings, meanwhile, are desperately searching for answers after watching a dream campaign suddenly spiral into a survival battle.
