New Delhi, Oct 26: Virat Kohli has resumed intensive training ahead of India's upcoming one-day international series against New Zealand, sharpening his
skills with the white ball as he prepares for the next assignment. A video circulating on social media on Sunday showed the former India captain working through batting drills in the nets.
With Kohli having retired from both Test cricket and T20Is, the 50-over format is now his sole international focus. The limited number of matches between ODI assignments makes his training and fitness routines particularly important as he looks to maintain his competitive edge.
The veteran batter is yet to travel to New Zealand, but his performances in the three-match series are likely to attract considerable attention. Questions surrounding the future of and Rohit Sharma in India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa continue to generate debate.
New Zealand assistant coach James Pamment recently weighed in on the discussion, stressing that senior players who have served their teams for years should have the freedom to decide when to end their careers. Pamment has experience working alongside Rohit during his eight-year stint as Mumbai Indians' fielding coach.
"When the time is coming towards the end of their careers, it is a conversation that is always had with them. Those guys have earned the right to make the decision on when they do want to move away," Pamment said while discussing the futures of Kohli and Rohit.

He added that if the two veterans view the World Cup as a major career target, they deserve backing, with their eventual selection depending on performances and contributions to the team.
Although Pamment said he had never worked directly with Kohli, he praised the Indian star's approach to the game, describing him as the "ultimate professional. " Having observed Kohli closely while involved with New Zealand cricket and the Mumbai Indians, Pamment said the batter was someone he would want in his environment consistently because of his professionalism.
India's ODI series against New Zealand is scheduled to begin on November 4, offering Kohli another opportunity to strengthen his case as the team's preparations for the next World Cup cycle gather momentum.
