Shai Hope has given his critics a rather expensive reality check, and his gym-fuelled batting transformation is costing Indian bowlers plenty of runs.
The West Indies captain smashed an unbeaten 102 off 50 balls against India in Hyderabad on October 14, becoming the first Caribbean batter to score three T20I centuries.
His nine sixes helped West Indies secure a 24-run victory and level the five-match series 2-2. However, behind Hope's newfound aggression lie years of strength training, relentless practice, and an unexpected piece of batting wisdom from MS Dhoni.

Shai Hope's Gym Obsession Has Changed His Batting DNA
For years, Shai Hope carried a peculiar reputation in international cricket. His ODI credentials were formidable, although his relatively cautious batting invited criticism whenever West Indies needed explosive starts in T20 cricket.
That criticism became particularly severe during the 2026 T20 World Cup, when Hope managed 32 off 33 deliveries against India in a crucial encounter. West Indies subsequently failed to defend 195, giving his detractors another opportunity to question his suitability for the shortest format.
However, teammate Roston Chase has disclosed what has been happening away from the cameras.
Discussing Hope's rejuvenated hitting, Chase explained that the captain had undertaken extensive physical conditioning, saying (via ), "he has done a lot of gym work to make himself stronger and more powerful. "
Chase also credited regular range-hitting sessions, during which Hope practised generating maximum power from different batting positions. The preparation has continued over several years, making his transformation the product of sustained effort rather than an overnight miracle.
The contrast with his childhood is rather charming. Growing up in Barbados, Hope began playing cricket with a small wooden bat made by his father, Ian, who worked as a joiner. Alongside his older brother Kyle, he practised in the family garage before developing his skills through school cricket and eventually securing a scholarship to Bede's School in England.
His evolution has required more than muscle. Hope has adapted his batting stance, altered his backlift, and embraced a more aggressive approach to finding boundaries. Even Chase believes the captain's accomplishments remain underappreciated.
"I think people underrate Shai Hope a lot," he remarked, defending a teammate whose professionalism has survived considerable scrutiny.
MS Dhoni's Batting Wisdom Preceded Hope's Record-Breaking Rampage
Hope's extraordinary India tour also carries an intriguing connection to MS Dhoni, whose advice influenced his approach to pursuing enormous targets.
During the third ODI in New Chandigarh, Hope struck an unbeaten 162 as West Indies chased 352, their highest successful run chase in the format.
The innings also eclipsed Brian Lara's 153 against Pakistan in 1993 as the highest individual score by a West Indies men's batter during a successful ODI chase. Afterward, Hope recalled a conversation with Dhoni, who had encouraged him to recognise that batters often possess more time than they initially believe.
"I had a great chat with the great man MS Dhoni, he was telling you always have more time than you think," Hope said (per ). That advice complemented his strategy of dividing a difficult chase into manageable phases and reserving opportunities for attacking strokes toward the end.
Hope subsequently took that composure into the T20I series.
In Ranchi, he struck 102 off 45 balls as West Indies reached 253/4 in 18.3 overs, completing the second-highest successful chase in men's T20 international history. His Hyderabad century delivered another significant distinction: three T20I hundreds, surpassing the previous West Indies record of two held by Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis.
More amusingly, Hope joked about potential excess baggage charges after collecting his third Player of the Match trophy during the India tour (via ).
I find Hope's reinvention particularly satisfying because he has resisted the temptation to answer criticism through bravado. His response has been considerably more punishing: stronger hitting, better preparation, and enormous scores against formidable opposition.
With the series decider scheduled for October 17 in Bengaluru, Hope has another opportunity to demonstrate how thoroughly he has rewritten his T20 reputation. Could West Indies' once-criticised anchor now become their most feared aggressor?
