New Delhi, Sep 30: India clinched their seventh gold medal in the ongoing Asian Games 2026 at Aichi-Nagoya on Wednesday, as the women's Compound Archery
team managed to defend its title from Hangzhou.
India's women's compound archery team secured a second consecutive Asian Games gold after defeating China 238-234 in a closely contested final. Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Prithika Pradeep and Chikita Thaniparthi combined effectively to defend the title India had won at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.
The victory also saw India match the world and Asian record as well as the Games record set by South Korea in September 2014, giving the country its second gold medal in the event.
India had earlier booked its place in the final after a narrow 234-233 victory over South Korea in the semi-final. The contest remained tight throughout, with the Koreans fighting back strongly in the second half to make it 175-175. India regained the advantage by one point before Chikita and Prithika produced 10s, while Jyothi added a nine to secure the win.
The latest triumph extends India's remarkable record in the women's compound team event. Since the discipline was introduced in 2014, India has won a medal at every edition-bronze in 2014, silver in 2018 and gold in the last two editions. Jyothi, 30, has been a member of all four medal-winning teams.
The gold medal also lifted India to ninth place in the overall medal table. Earlier on Tuesday, India had added its sixth gold of the competition after the women's 4x400m relay team produced a historic performance in the final.
