Bhuvneshwar Kumar endured an expensive return to India's playing XI as New Zealand posted a formidable 225/4 in 20 overs in the first T20I at Hagley Oval,
Christchurch.
The experienced Indian pacer struggled to contain the hosts' aggressive batting lineup, as the Kiwis have posted a mammoth total in the first T20I encounter.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Comeback: 49 Runs, No Wickets
Bhuvneshwar's return to India's T20I playing XI came after an extended absence from international cricket. His previous T20I appearance was against New Zealand on November 22, 2022, meaning he returned to the format after 1,430 days.
The veteran seamer finished with figures of 4-0-49-0, conceding runs at an economy rate of 12.25. He also bowled two no-balls and two wides, with the additional deliveries contributing to an expensive outing against a New Zealand batting order that maintained an aggressive approach throughout the innings.
Bhuvneshwar's experience and ability to generate movement had made his return a significant talking point. However, the Christchurch encounter proved challenging, as New Zealand's batters found ways to score freely against India's bowling attack.
Glenn Phillips Leads New Zealand's Batting Charge
Glenn Phillips was the standout performer for the hosts, finishing unbeaten on 78 off 39 deliveries, with seven fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 200. Finn Allen provided an explosive start with 45 off 24 balls, while Tim Seifert contributed 24 off 17 deliveries.
Daryl Mitchell added 28 before Bevon Jacobs accelerated with 31 off 16 balls, including three sixes. Jacobs was run out, but the dismissal did little to disrupt New Zealand's momentum as Michael Bracewell remained unbeaten on seven.
India's bowling unit struggled collectively. Axar Patel conceded 51 runs in four overs, while Arshdeep Singh and Mayank Yadav claimed one wicket apiece. The onus will now be on the Indian batting unit to pull off the mammoth chase.
