England moved a step closer to the World Cup knockout rounds but could not finish the job, as Thomas Tuchel’s side were held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana at
Boston Stadium, leaving qualification from Group L dependent on avoiding defeat against Panama in their final pool match.
The goalless stalemate meant a win would have sealed progress with a game to spare, yet England now rely on their result against Panama, who meet Croatia in their second fixture, while Ghana took encouragement from a stubborn display that disrupted England’s attack and created anxious moments on the break.
England controlled long spells of possession from the start and built pressure in Ghana’s half, but the final touch was missing as Declan Rice fired a fierce free-kick over the bar on 14 minutes and further first-half efforts from Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and Rice again all failed to trouble goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.
The lack of cutting edge produced a rare landmark, as neither England nor Ghana managed a shot on target before half-time, making it the first World Cup match since Croatia against Belgium in 2022 in which both sides reached the interval without registering a single effort on goal.
England finally recorded an attempt on target shortly before the hour when Anthony Gordon’s low strike tested Asare, and the goalkeeper later denied Kane from the edge of the area, while substitutes Bukayo Saka, Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze added fresh energy but still could not break Ghana’s disciplined defensive shape.
Tuchel’s team continued to create late pressure as Saka forced a fine low save from Asare with a curling shot and Nico O’Reilly then headed Reece James’ cross against the woodwork, only for the rebound to fall to Kane, who shot over from six yards as Ghana survived intense closing minutes.

Tuchel will reflect on a mixed performance after England produced 19 shots without scoring, their highest total in a World Cup match since 2002 against Nigeria, when they attempted 25 efforts, and they finished with an expected goals value of 1.28, highlighting both their territorial dominance and their wastefulness in front of goal.
England had 104 completed passes ending in the final third by half-time, the most recorded by any team in a World Cup game without a first-half shot on target since data collection began in 1966, while Guehi completed 126 passes overall, the highest total by an England player in any World Cup match on record.

Guehi also drew seven fouls, matching the highest number by any defender in a World Cup match on record since 1966, and even went close to scoring with a late header that was cleared off the line, leaving Tuchel with defensive positives but clear attacking questions before England meet Panama seeking the result required to progress.
